Hareline Large Northern Bucktails have become a staple in most tying rooms around the world. The challenge was always that, because of the variation in natural materials, especially at commercial quantities, you never knew what you were going to get when buying online. Alternatively, you could go to the local shop in person, but that still required hand-sorting one tail at a time to hopefully find a few good ones.
Fortunately for you, we now simplify bucktail selection by hand-grading, so you know you're getting the good stuff!
Decades of collective expertise tying and fishing have gone into defining our exacting bucktail grading standards. If they're not up to snuff for larger flies, they get put on clearance (which still results in some solid tails at a great price for smaller patterns, flaring Buford heads, etc.).
All of our graded Hareline tails are perfect for musky and Predator flies.
Grade 1 - 3.5"+ length, soft fibers, great crinkle/texture, ultra fine tips. The fibers on these Grade 1 tails are longer than we recommend for the majority of Musky patterns, but they're ideal for specific uses like longer tail tie-ins on singles or upsized profiles on larger articulated flies.
Grade 2 - ~3" length, soft fibers, good crinkle/texture, fine tips. These are ideal for the majority of Musky and large predator fly tying applications.
Some of our grade 2 tails have even longer fibers or other ideal traits, but may have some other minor imperfection. But make no mistake, these are still outstanding tails...we're just extremely picky. Some of the best tyers out there prefer these 3"+ fibers to longer lengths for flies that are easier to cast (we would know, since they tie for us!).
One tail per bag. Pictures are for color reference only.
